Greenville, SC’s Surprise
It’s only been in the last 15 years that Greenville, SC has gotten its current reputation as a city with a great quality of life, strong business community and fantastic downtown. The residents (and visitors) have flocked—no doubt encouraged by the media attention Greenville has received as a recommended travel destination.
Because Greenville’s transformation has been so recent—our city often surprises its first-time visitors—including Dispatch travel writer Steve Stephens. He discusses his experience in Greenville in his article titled “Former factory town Greenville, S.C. becomes tourist magnet:”
A few years back, I was on a plane to Florida when my seatmate, a stranger, suggested that her hometown would make a good story for a travel writer.
“Greenville has become a wonderful place for tourists,” she insisted.
I was skeptical.
Even a few decades ago, this city in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains wouldn’t have made many travelers’ must-see lists…
After Lonely Planet, TripAdvisor, AARP, Forbes, Southern Living, CBS News and others had all touted the city’s delights, I finally decided I’d bite.
It was a good decision.
Stephens concludes his article, saying…
After experiencing all that Greenville had to offer, I was no longer asking ‘Why go?’ but rather “What took me so long?”
